Value chain analysis of Bamboo based products in Mundgod and Haliyal Taluk of Uttara Kannada District of Karnataka

A field experiment was carried out on value chain analysis of bamboo-based products in Mundgod and Haliyal Taluk of Karnataka in Western Ghat region during 2023-24. The primary and secondary data from farmers and State Forest Department were collected on
utilization pattern and marketing value chain of bamboo species assessed. Results revealed that 64 per cent of individuals collected bamboo sources from Sirsi followed by 24 per cent from Banavasi. In Mundgod region workers exclusively preferred Dendrocalamus
stocksii (solid bamboo) and minimum individuals opted Dendrocalamus strictus. The preference for the solid bamboo is mainly due to its popularity and suitability among bamboo workers in the region. In Haliyal Taluk 44 per cent of individuals collected bamboo sources from Khanapur, while 30 per cent opted natural forest area of Haliyal Taluk. The highest sourcing of bamboo in Haliyal taluk was mainly due to united efforts of the participants in collecting bamboo resources. The economic value chain analysis of bamboo in Mundgod taluk reported that 52 per cent earn an annual income ranging from Rs. 30,000/- to Rs. 50,000/-, Whereas in Haliyal Taluk 46 per cent earn same amount income ranging from Rs. 30,000/- to Rs. 50,000/- which was driven by the demand for Bamboo products.
