Abstract
The present study deals with the Benefit cost ratio in the Lakhimpur Kheri district of Uttar Pradesh. The Lakhimpur Kheri district was selected purposively in order to avoid operational in convenience. One block (Phoolbehar) having highest area under rice crop was selected purposively and from selected block 5 villages were selected randomly. The cost of cultivation of rice per hectare came to Rs. 53269.74. The cost of cultivation was maximum on medium farms (Rs.58611.83) followed by small farms (Rs. 55143.37) and marginal farms (Rs. 47521.61) respectively. Per hectare cost of cultivation was highest (58611.83) on medium farms, mainly due to maximum investment on fixed capital compared to the small and marginal farms. The Average input-output ratio on cost A1, cost B1, cost B2, cost C1, cost C2 and cost C3 were worked out and came to 1:2.71, 1:1.59, 1:1.26, 1:1.42, 1:1.29 and 1:1.33, respectively. Input-output ratio related to cost C3 was highest on marginal farms (1:1.41) followed by medium farms (1:1.35), and small farms (1:1.22). In respect of cost C2 input-output ratio (1:1.70) was highest on medium farms followed by marginal farms (1:1.62), and small farms (1:1.08). Cost C1 input-output ratio (1:1.90) was highest marginal farms followed by medium farms (1:1.24) and small farms 1:1.18). In respect to input-output ratio (1:1.63) of B2 was found highest on marginal (1:1.35) farms followed by medium farms (1:1.23) and small farms (1:1.18) whereas, in Cost B1 the input-output ratio was highest on marginal farms (1:2.31) followed by medium farms (1:1.31) and small farms (1:1.30). In respect to cost A1, input output ratio cost A1, was highest on marginal farms (1:3.23) followed by medium farms (1:2.64) and small farms (1:2.23), respectively.
Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is the most important staple food crop in Asia. More than 90% of the world’s rice is grown and consumed in Asia, where 60% of the world’s population lives. Rice accounts for between 35-60% of the caloric intake of three billion. Over 150 million hectares of rice are planted annually, covering about 10% of the world’s arable land. Rice is grown in the tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world. The global requirement of rice by (2050 AD) world by 800 million tones, which is 26% higher than the present level of production. Rice is the main staple food and the first cultivated crop in Asia long before the area of which we have the historical evidences. No one really knows exactly where first seed of rice originated. Cultivation of rice in Tropical Asia probably began about 10,000 years ago. In India, oldest specimen of rice was found in Hasthinapur (UP) in a carbonized form during excavation (1000-750 BC).
